I don’t have to take the food away from my cat to cause the “I’m hungry” wail. Food bowl or not, all it takes is for me to walk towards that end of the house where his food bowl is located. I think that my cat Sam (known as “son of” to the rodent world) equates me feeding him with love.

The kitties must have put an alarm on the bottom of the bowl to let them know when it was moved.
