The actual line is āMusick has charms to soothe a savage breastā, which is the first line of the play āThe Mourning Brideā by William Congreve.
Beethoven got annoyed when he was playing a new piece and some rich, fashionable folks sat there and talked through it. He had much the same reaction as Schroeder.
Iām with Schroeder on this one, you canāt possibly listen to music and talk at the same time. Especially when invited to listen to specially picked out music.
This kind of endless yakking reflects my experiences over many years in concert halls, back when we could actually still go to concert halls (sigh). My sister is a āmulti-tasker,ā while I prefer to focus on one thing at a time.
I believe he should have first stopped the record and asked them to be quiet then tried playing it again. Then if they kept talking he should have kicked them out. True, he should have asked for some silence before he even started the record, but They clearly would have ignored that.
