Flashback to when Jaws was in theatres…a lot of kids refused to get in the swimming pool, bathtub, etc for fear of sharks. I remember the gym teacher taking us to the high school pool and pointing out that the water was clear, chlorinated and contained no seawater. “Do you SEE a shark in there? Do you think a shark could survive in that much chlorine? And lemme ask you all—how would a shark get into a pool in Iowa? Through the water pipes?”
Way back in high school, I went to a summer marine biology camp. After a few days of collecting and collating sea life, our counselors decided we’d done enough work and took us into town to see a movie. The movie, of course, was “Jaws.”
There’s a primal fear of actually being killed AND eaten which scares the bejeebers out of us. It’s the adrenaline rush of movies like Jaws and Jurassic Park to name but two which so attract and repel us simultaneously.
I’ve heard that during filming they had continuing problems with the mechanical shark and so Spielberg decided they would just have to use John Williams’s menacing music in place of actually having the shark. And of course it turned out to be much scarier.

When the Van Pelt’s pool landed on him, CB mistook it for a UFO. Then, when he saw Lucy in her swimming gear, he mistook her for a Martian.

A group of us decided to see Jaws the day before our open water SCUBA dive in NY, big mistake!
