Callie would chase the squirrels from one tree to another. Each time just to within reaching distance, then back off. It was the chase, not the catching that she enjoyed.
Had a Siamese that played in a tree with a Blue Jay one spring. The Jay would sit on a branch until Spot (he thought he was a dog) would get close and then leap to another branch. They did this every morning and it was so much fun to watch. I firmly believe that animals play.
I saw a very angry squirrel mouthing off against a cat who ignored him. The squirrel was concentrating so much on the cat he didn’t notice me so close. I could see him stepping away from his autistic concentration to notice me. He wasn’t happy. I walked away so he could harass the nonchalant cat who was being cool, calm and entertained.
I had a doberman Pincer who would play with birds… would sit very still and let them walk onto his outstretched front paws – Bye Bye Birdie….How he learned this I never knew…. Yum….
One evening I caught my cat playing with a mouse. He’d grab it up in his mouth, carry it a few feet, and drop it. The mouse would try to run away, and the cat would grab it up again. When I saw what was happening, I got the mouse away from him. The mouse seemed unhurt, so I set it loose outside. The cat was playing, but the mouse wasn’t. It probably didn’t enjoy it at all!

My cat will sit right under the bird feeder and hope that a bird will fall in his mouth.
