Knotholes were a comic strip cliche back in the mutt and jeff days, much like the desert island and texting are today. Knothole clubs were established in many schools and stadiums in honour of the practice of watching a game through a hole in the fence. The knothole club is a bar at Angels Stadium.

When I went to elementary school in the late 40’s and early 50’s we had a chainlink fence around our school yard, so they have been around at least that long.
