The research basically shows that more money makes you happier, but only up to the point where your basic needs are met. In other words, if you can’t buy food or keep the bill collectors away, this will make you less happy. Beyond that, though, it doesn’t seem to help much.

If being rich makes you happy, why do so many celebrities do drugs, drink too much, have broken marriages, and some even take their own lives?

I think direction is more important than destination. If things are improving you’re happy; getting worse, you’re sad.
