Homeowner tip #176. An uninterruptible power supply (UPS) costs about $60 – $120 (or more depending on what you want to do with them). For my purposes I go for the low-end ones, since I only need enough power to shut things down gracefully in the event of a power failure.

You should have one on every computer and monitor. Most power outages last a couple of seconds but it sure can ruin your day when you lose that file you’ve been working on and, possibly, ruin the hard drive (this doesn’t happen as much anymore.)

I also have one on that computer known as my cable box. It takes 20 minutes to reboot, so I am not inconvenienced by the two-second outages.

For extended outages, we shut everything down. The UPS has an annoying beep, so we turn it off. It still has enough charge to power a computer or television for 30 minutes – which is enough to charge several phones for several days. Disconnect the other appliances, turn it back on, put up with the beeping, charge the phones.

That is sort of like the Trump/ toilet-paper thing. Or is it like the Trump/ can’t-keep-it-in-his-pants thing??
