My hypothesis is that Fleshie isn’t from this time nor is he a feline. More closely related to squirrels 50 myif. When the canines, bears and cats died out the rodents started to fill the niches and some became intelligent and hairless. Among them are Fleshie’s people. Fleshie is an archeologist and found a cache of human items in a stasis box. And that lead him to finding a means to time-travel and making his way back to our time to live the good life.
