Awwww Ziggy, but the little squirrel has been waiting all day for you. Can’t you spare a few crumbs? After all squirrels are needed to find the nuts!

…pretty rough there ladyfingers. FYI , nature doesn’t make ‘junk’. No doubt the squirrel has it’s important place in the scheme of things. You know some of those nuts they plant turn into actual trees. How many trees have you planted for your benevolent birds lately?

Ladyfingers86, sounds like you try to grow a garden too. They make my life crazy in the spring/summer! Sorry Relevart, I have yet to find anything important about squirrels!

And plant it somewhere near your house or garden, Da. I keep pulling up new oaks from spring to fall.

This morning, one of the lovely creatures was on top of the bird feeder (which hangs two feet under the tall limb) wrapped around it like a lover and devouring bird seed. I opened the door and yelled and the birds ran away. He just hung there until I headed out the door. We keep putting up “covers” and they still knock the feeders down.

My wife won’t let me use the .22 cause she still thinks they (unlike raccoons) are cute. Someday, she’ll be shopping and…

My outside cats do enjoy chasing them up the tree.

Put unsalted roasted peanuts in the shell on the ground below the bird feeder. That will keep both the squirrels and the birds happy. Squirrels need to eat too, you know.

My Dad built a platform that he attached to the tree. Up through the base of the platform was a 4” spike. On the spike he would put a cob of corn. The squirrels loved that and it was fun watching them fight for positions on the platform and chasing each other around the tree (sometimes while the one in the lead had the corncob in its mouth). Did you ever wonder how they can run around a tree regardless of whether they’re facing the sky or facing the ground? Besides being inventive, they’re probably some of the best acrobats in the world.

One time a batch of donuts my Mom made didn’t turn out so good. Rather than throw them out, I placed them one at a time on the platform and waited for a squirrel. My first nature photo was of a squirrel, donut in mouth, ascending the tree.

Yes, they are terrific acrobats. Folks, just because someone is a rodent, that doesn’t mean he or she isn’t a nice animal. Some of my best friends have been rats and squirrels. In our back yard, the squirrels and birds get along just fine. We love them all equally. Incidentally, the squirrels share their peanuts with the crows.

Around here, we don’t have tree squirrels, but we do have chipmunks. Lots and lots of chipmunks.

    They tease the dogs mercilessly.

They eat half a strawberry, and leave the other half on top of a fencepost.

One will attract my attention by running along a fence rail, while another one is in the strawberries, stealing one.

When I go out the door, they will make a mad dash in front of me, chittering madly all the while, instead of, you know, running the other way and not making a sound.

Why does the squirrel choose to dig in your potted plant when it has an entire back yard in which to dig? They dig up my tomato seedlings and everything else, and if you somehow manage to salvage a plant long enough to bear fruit, they eat that too! Squirrels are just tree rats and need to stay in the forest!

Mix antiseptic foot powder into the soil with the seeds or around any bulb plants (I learned after the little tykes ate up all my tulip bulbs one season). Won’t hurt the seeds and the squirrels are offended, Fogger.

Chipmunks hate castor oil, human and cat (male)urine, Jerry Baker has some formulas in his books. and there are a couple poisons (Golpher (or golpha) -rid for one) that come in pellets you can bury deep in their food mounds in the fall to get them in the winter or in the early spring when there isn’t a lot of other food. Keeping cats in the area will keep them down a bit, too.

eradication? poison outside? Harsh. That’s all I can say is ‘harsh’, rather cruel, and not very wise.

You think squirrels are bad, try herds of deer. I have discovered bird netting. Just cover anything you don’t want eaten. It’s invisible from a distance. We have to share our earth with squirrrels and deer, since we’ve chased the larger predators away.
