Things really that bad in ‘92? I was in her position ten years earlier in an almost-third-world country and never faced this problem. (Maybe that went on more in more rural areas, but when it did I suspect it strongly depended on the teacher’s personality.)
I must have gone to a different sort of school. In my day the girls were hands up and answering questions all the time. Which was fine with me since most of the time I did not know the answers. At least when the teacher called on me, I did not know the answer.
I once felt excluded like that In class. I finally spoke up and said, “ask me something”. The teacher did, and wouldn’t you know it, I didn’t know the answer…
I am a decade or two older than Alex. But I can report in that day and age, I was told that I couldn’t play with the blocks because the boys were playing with the blocks. I screamed so loud they sent me to the social worker. And a feminist was born.
Comics exaggerate to make points. There has historically been a gap with girls going into the “hard” professions involving using science and math, I believe Trudeau was trying to point this out.
I gather my comment to a rude person was removed.Annoying that I still get notifications that it was replied to.I hate censorship. That is what generally inhibits me from participating in many online discussions.
My daughter would not even put her hand up. She says “but I know it anyway, and the teacher knows that I know. I want to give the other kids the opportunity to show they know it, too”. Problem is, in primary school, she always had A grades, and her teacher knew her well. Now she is in her first year of the high school, and doesn’t understand why she would get a C only because she didn’t show she would know it. Doesn’t have a problem with the boys, though. It was similar with her chess lessons. She always explained the rules to the kids who didn’t get them straight. The teacher would neglect her and thinking, she would not be interested in learning. My wife went mad, and picking our daughter up one day from the lesson, she said: “You have to play against the stronger players, not only the dull ones!” Next time, she asked: “Did you play with the stronger players?” and my daughter said “yes. I played with him (pointing to a boy), he is the best”. My wife: “And, how did it go? Did he win?” My daughter: “Mother, no! He is not THAT good.”

It’s the brown and green outfit — too camouflagie. The teacher can’t see you.

Sad how some people think that getting a “Featured Comment” on a comic strip is the emotional high point of their day…
