In 1976, I shake hands with President Gerald Ford as he leaves the stage following an Oklahoma City Bicentennial speech. I haven’t washed my hand since.

I once saw Tip O’Neill, then speaker of the house, standing on the curb outside the general aviation (private and charter planes) terminal at Washington National Airport. He looked annoyed, and was probably wondering where in hell his official ride was. It was good to see an important politico stranded curbside like anyone else.

Richard Nixon showed up towards the end of my grandparents’ 50th anniversary party and played the piano. He was actually quite good at it. He was trying to be all, y’know, friendly-like to try to get my Republican Grampa not to vote to impeach him. Grampa ended up being one of the ones who let it quietly be known that Nixon could resign or he could be the first president convicted and removed.
