There is a monster creature called a “hide” or “hide-behind” and it pounces on unsuspecting animals or humans and strips their flesh from their bones in seconds. They resemble an animal hide, just that it has four large eyes and a rim of much smaller eyes. They can swim too. Found in Switzerland, Chile and USA.

Incidentally, his story calls to mind one of my favorite nearly-forgotten comic book characters, The Heap, part human, part vegetable. Really.
