Between 1776 and 1781, the first first president (of the Continental Congress; the first government) was John Hancock. The second first president (of the C.C.) was Samuel Huntington. The first ELECTED president was John Hanson (and attested as first president by one G. Washington)…
Before the Constitution was ratified, the office of President of the United States didn’t yet exist, because the nation didn’t yet exist, so any leaders before then, either of the Continental Congress or Congress of the Confederation, including both Johns mentioned above, were not Presidents of the United States. George Washington became the first official president of the new nation in Feb. 1789.
Before the Constitution we had the Articles of the Confederation….which was an operational disaster. No exec branch meant that Congress had to decide everything (by taking a tedious vote) and they were only around for part of the year anyway. Not much of a judicial system either. The Constitution is basically USA 2.0 We tend to forget the founding fathers weren’t perfect on Day 1 of getting the country’s foundational structure right.
