It’s no joke; this really happens. Some rehab programs in North Carolina and elsewhere have come under investigation in recent years for providing precisely this sort of “slave labor” for the program’s owner-directors and/or their cronies. Typically, a judge directs defendants to the programs as part of their sentence — most often for drug-related offenses — and the programs arrange labor for their buddies’ companies, or sometimes businesses they themselves own. The rehab directors tell the court they’re paying participants a living wage, but what frequently has been the case with some is that it’s really prison labor wages, or the paychecks just simply never come at all. Most of any contract fee goes back into the program owner’s pocket, or in the case of their own businesses, is little more than free full-time labor.

No thanks to community service. They do such a half azz job you have to go over their work yourself.

If Judge Art Vandelay had presided, he would have been sentenced to be the cop’s butler!
