Cul de Sac by Richard Thompson for February 15, 2011
Transcript:
Petey: I've got to do a project on a U.S. president and I got stuck with Rutherford B. Hayes. Mom: He was a very good president! Petey: He's not inspiring! Andre got Abraham Lincoln - he was really tall and had a great hat! Loris got Theodore Roosevelt - he had a big mustache! And he had to gnaw on furniture constantly so his teeth wouldn't grow through his skull. That's inspiring! Mom: Tell me that's not from your textbook.

As a fan of the Racing Rushmores mascots of the Washington Nationals baseball club, Iām not surprised to see Teddy get no respect ā AGAIN. Coincidental that this is the first day of spring training, and that Richard Thompsonās home base is The Washington Post? Conspiracy theorists say āthey want you to think that.ā

Teddy was our first beaver president. How could Hayes shine next to that?
eric stott about 14 years ago
You wouldnāt think it from his presidential portraits, but the young Rutherford Hayes was quite a looker:

In his way, Petey is kind of the R.B. Hayes of comic strip characters.

Hayes didnāt just have a mustacheāhe had a beard! Also, he was the first President to successfully steal an election (people used to call him RutherFRAUD B. Hayes). There wouldnāt be another until JFK in 1960 and (almost) Al Gore in 2000.

Poor Petey

I have a hard time believing Petey wouldnāt be happier the more obscure his president was. Presidents that people have heard of? Pah! Those are for amateurs!

deskmandmnaThanks for the link, funny, too, at times! Yes, he was a looker!

Hayes was a horrible president. Like his fellow fraudster who stole the White House 124 years later, heād lost the popular vote, but traded an electoral win for the disenfranchisement of black Americans in the south, leading to decades of murderous injustice. It was also the death knell for the G.O.P. as a party of civil rights.

Petey could fire up a hot presentation on Stolen Elections - and segue into the present day, when weāre STILL suffering from the Stolen Election of 2000ā¦ History will remember Dubya as the worst President since Jeff Davis.

It makes sense that GW treated his teeth with wood polish- since Iāve heard they were of wood. As someone who has had full dentures from my 30s, I understand obsession with keeping them as smoothe and comfortable as possible - not sure about the Teddy Roosevelt thing though and what could have caused such a beliefā¦

The way the liberals have rewritten American history to denigrate the founding fathers, I wouldnāt be surprised to find something like that in one of them.
