I think that ninety eight dollars for butter and thirty nine dollars for bread is a bit steep.

The prices are in cents. My dad managed a grocery store around this time. The prices were put on most cans, boxes, packages, etc. with round stamps that went from 1 cent to 99 cents. Meat products were about the only thing that would be over $1 and those were priced separately.
