Had to look this up, but apparently Riggs, a 55 year old tennis pro, challenged the top female player, 30 year old Margaret Court and won. But in September, Billie Jean King will represent for the ladies and win big.

The dialogue here between Linus and Lucy was used in “It’s The Easter Beagle,Charlie Brown,” just before the end, where it’s almost ten weeks after Easter, and Lucy is lying on the floor, moping, with her head on a pillow(like here), because Snoopy had foiled her plans to surprise the gang with Easter eggs(as we all know), until Linus suggests she talk to the “Easter Beagle,” just like he suggests to her, here, that she write a letter. Thanks for the info, LadyBlanc—I always wondered what it was Lucy is so angry about here; seems she must have rooted for Margaret Court, forty years ago.

At least I could swear, there was a version of the Peanuts Easter special, where this dialogue was used at the end—in fact, if I’m not mistaken, it was the same version of the special, where the gang all see “pre-pre-PRE-Christmas sales,” while out shopping for Easter things(it’s true—they may have FAIRLY RECENTLY had Christmas, yet, in this version of the special, Sally is the first one to notice Christmas trees and decorations ALREADY for sale-I"m NOT kidding!

It’s hard to make contemporary references when you’ve got a ten-week lead time for Sunday strips, but Schulz finds a way to make it funny… :-)
