It did a fly-by down the California coast back when I worked at a naval base there. We all stopped work and went into the parking lot (about a half-mile from the beach) to watch it go by, and say farewell.

They flew it atop a modified 747. (The middle number missing)

Never open your mouth when looking up.

It was an amazing experience to see and be a part of. :-)

It flew over the Washington Navy Yard on the way to Dulles. It did look so tiny perched on the plane!

I connected through El Paso once. As we were taxiing, I looked over at the adjacent Air Force base, and there was the shuttle/747 combo, stopping off on the way back from the landing site to Cape Canaveral.
