I have been laid off twice for “purely business reasons.” The first company let go everyone over 40 yo and not vested in the company funded pension plan. The second let go mostly those over 55 and salary 15% above average. Both companies lost huge amount of business because quality and quantity (lost work ethic) dropped substantially after the layoffs; which caused more layoffs.
