That’s not how debt worked back then. Collection agencies are nice in comparison to poor farms and prisons. Poe was a hard-working writer, literary critic, and editor until the day he died, and the idea that he could do that and be a fall-down drunk is ridiculous. Poe was depressive, but his “friend” who wrote his biography lied about him to destroy his legacy. The bad news is most still believe the lies, the good news is his jealous writing friend is only know by English majors who hate him, and the world loves Poe’s works.
