Final Peanuts Comic - by Charles Schulz for February 13, 2000
Transcript:
Charlie Brown: No, I think he's writing. Snoopy:Dear Friends.... Charles Schulz: Dear Friends, I have been fortunate to draw Charlie Brown and his friends for almost 50 years. It has been the fulfillment of my childhood ambition. Unfortunately, I am no longer able to maintain the schedule demanded by a daily comic strip. My family does not wish Peanuts to be continued by anyone else, therefore I am announcing my retirement. I have been grateful over the years for the loyalty of our editors and the wonderful support and love expressed to me by fans of the comic strip. Charlie Brown, Snoopy, Linus, Lucy ... how can I ever forget them ... Charles M. Schulz

Shultz died the very next day – If he had lasted 8 more months (to October 2), Peanuts would’ve ran unsyndicated for 50 years – how tragic

Thus ends a tradition. Sparky died the day before this strip ran, so this strip ran with his obituary:
Charles Monroe Schultz1922-11-26 —— 2000-02-12
He will be missed.
For those wanting to reread the strip from the beginning, one can find the first strip here:
http://gocomics.com/peanuts/1950/10/02
Many fans like to read strips from the beginning. GoComics.Com should have a button taking people to the first of each strip. As it is, if one wishes to start reading from the beginning, one must luckup the startdate on WikiPedia.Org and enter that date into the URL.

This is the final “Peanuts” comic strip. It was published the day after Charles Schulz died. Due to his wishes, the comic strip reran in newspapers after the publication of this strip. I’m glad the end of “Peanuts” did not resolve any character traits. I’m glad Charlie Brown did not finally meet the Little Red-Haired Girl, kick the football from Lucy, or keep his kite in the air. I’m glad Linus did not outgrow his blanket. I’m glad Miss Othmar never appeared. Instead, this strip reminds us of how great “Peanuts” was. Even though the strip ended, we can still enjoy the strip while we can also decide ourselves on what the Little-Red Haired Girl looks like, if the Great Pumpkin actually exists, or if Charlie Brown will kick the football. You’re a good boy, Charlie Brown. You’re a good dog, Snoopy. You’re a good man, Charles Schulz.

Schulz died at his home on February 12, 2000 at the age of 77, of colon cancer. The last original Peanuts strip was published the next day, Sunday, February 13. Schulz had predicted that the strip would outlive him because the strips were usually drawn weeks before their publication. Schulz was buried at Pleasant Hills Cemetery in Sebastopol, California.
As part of his contract with the syndicate, Schulz requested that no other artist be allowed to draw Peanuts. United Features had legal ownership of the strip, but honored his wishes, instead syndicating reruns to newspapers. New television specials have also been produced since Schulz’s death, with the stories based on previous strips; Schulz always said the TV shows were entirely separate from the strip.
Schulz was honored on May 27, 2000, by cartoonists of more than 100 comic strips, who paid homage to him and Peanuts by incorporating his characters into their strips that day.

Good ol’ Charles Schulz! Thank you, Sparky, for the wonderful creation you brought into this world! Peanuts shall be loved forever! Also, many cartoonists did a tribute to Sparky on the 27th of May of the same year, featuring the characters from Peanuts in their strips. Comics who did a tribute include Big Nate, Garfield, and even Ripley’s Believe It or Not!

What a legacy… Shultz wrote and drew 17,889 comic strips. He did them all by himself for nearly 50 years. There are so many questions we still have: Did Charlie Brown kick the football? Did the Little-Red Haired girl ever fall in love with Charlie Brown? Did Lucy ever give helpful advice? Did Linus ever part from his blanket? Did Snoopy ever catch the Red Baron. We as the readers are deeply grieved at the end of the strip, but it will forever remain in the hearts of millions of Peanuts readers. So let’s be like Snoopy, who would be happy for the strip Shultz gave us.

If you look at some of the previous strips, you will see reruns. It really ended on January 3rd, 2000. Peanuts is a great comic strip, and we will all miss it.

When we had our newspaper delivered to our house, we would always get the Sunday comics on Saturday. So I was able to see this strip the day I heard the news that Sparky died. When I got that news, I cried and cried, because I felt like I lost a great friend, because I was, and still am, a huge fan of Peanuts. Sparky could never forget Charlie Brown, Snoopy and the entire Peanuts gang, and we will make sure that they will never be forgotten. You were a good man, Charles Schulz. We miss you, Sparky. RIP

“Lo, there do I see Schulz. Lo, there do I see my strips, and my wholesome moments, and my laughter. Lo, there do I see the line of newspaper comic strips, back to the beginning. Lo, they do call to me. They bid me take my place among them, in the halls of Comhalla, where the great artists may live forever.”
