Jury duty. I forget which NFL quarterback who was also going to law school compared his two vocations: “In one the goal is to outwit 11 people who aren’t smart enough to play offense, in the other the goal is to outwit 12 people who aren’t smart enough to get out of jury duty.”
Despite my strong belief in the judicial system, this is one time I hope the judge overturns this “moronic verdict” and returns the professor to his class vindicated.
When I was on jury duty I was asked to award damages to a conductor on New Jersey Transit who had been assaulted by drunken party goers. We were given absolutely no guidance what was an appropriate award. We ended up taking a grotesque amount of money away from the company and giving it to the plaintiff.
i’m waiting for the day when the plantiff will be Trump and the and the witnesses and the jury are the families who lost loved ones to Covid-19 because of the lack of preparedness by the federal gov’t; medical supplies, PPEs, and ventilators.

The judge can set aside the verdict and the award.

I’m waiting for the day the plaintiff will be a doctor and the members of the jury will be treated by him .

I don’t blame the juries for being stupid. I blame the judges for allowing it.

In a real trial, the jury only decides the verdict yeah or nay. They don’t decide on the consequences. The judge is responsible for that part.
