not what you think, mister landlord (even my apartment is one bedroom and ground floor which — for one thing — makes it easier to wheel my personal grocery cart to and from the grocery store… yes, the same one I work at)
This is a dangerous move for John. What if Fiona doesn’t want to move to that apartment and wants one even nicer? Even if she does agree to move, what if Fiona fails to pay the rent? John would be liable, because there is no way Fiona is going to pass a credit check.
Having read the comic during its initial run when I was younger was fun, now that I’m older, I don’t remember what happens next so it’s like reading a whole new strip. Memory loss has very few advantages, this is one of them!
the landlord was probably shocked that he didn’t give his name as John Smith. this is a win -win for both parties; Fiona will be out of their hair with her disgusting behavior and life can get back to normal for them; Fiona has a rent free place to stay while looking for a job.
Hopefully John didn’t sign anything so that the landlord doesn’t come looking for John when Fiona doesn’t have money to pay the rent, and when her cat tears up the apartment.

I think John’s attire was in observation of the fashion trend at the time – white collar with colorful patterned ties against a dark solid.

Now Fiona has two choices: take the apartment or go back to wherever she came from!

Again it’s a shame you have to literally buy an apartment for your lazy relative to leave.

It gets even worse, people. Keep reading — but be warned, the next few days are going to be very painful to watch!

Expensive. But is a good choice.

Of course her last name is “Brass”. She has brass ones, to come into other people’s houses and act like that.

What stood out to me is that he isn’t filling out any paperwork or lease. The landlord simply asks his name and then John is given a key.

I think today we’d just have everything after “Here’s the key, Fiona” edited out. Still a good joke!

Also – “Brass” as in “Balls”?

Day by day, in every way, this story is getting progressively less and less credible. (Redundancies intentional.)

I’m glad that you know so much about this comic strip. I just don’t understand your need to explain every little detail

Too much P.C. There are a lot of things that are funny if the P.C. police would mind their own business. I still love Blazing Saddles.
