Human beings can remember lots, if they try. Brahmins now, or formerly anyhow, committed the Vedas to memory and much of the Brāhmaį¹‡as and Upaniį¹£ads, likewise such things as the grammar of Pāį¹‡ini and PataƱjaliā€™s immense Mahābhāį¹£ya. Firm opposition to printing the Vedas etc. finally softened in the early 19th cent. when the Brahmins faced the fact that fewer and fewer Hindus were learning the scriptures by heart.
