Well, there is precedent. I recall an imaginary story from the 70s, where he got older and lost most of his powers. He was shown using his heat vision to dry his laundry. And in a story from the late 80s or early 90s, we got a look at his pre-Superman years. As a college student working his way through school as a short-order cook, he used his heat vision to get food to cook faster.
