I have noticed that people always repeat everything they say to a cat twice. I realized, eventually, there is a good reason: cats are really not interested in what we say. They may appear to coincidentally respond to your voice but they are actually reacting to the rustle of the cat food bag or postural cues. I did teach my “walking” cats to respond to “Look Out!” but I know they were responding to the warning tone.
They don’t really respond to my “Let’s go for a walk.” They wait until I’m actually putting on my shoes and headphones before heading for the door.
Show me a cat who will perform a task in another room on oral command and I’ll believe otherwise.
