Yesterday I fought over book vs movie, Today I ask, why wasn’t there a move in 1970 when I could have gloried in it?

There was an animated version in the late 70’s or early 80’s, but it was so bad it’s hardly worth mentioning. The animated version of the Hobbit was pretty good though.

Rankin-Bass also made a version of “Return of the King” which was pretty good. (The other animated version of LOTR from the 70’s/80’s was pretty unwatchable, even when I was a kid). However, the Rankin-Bass “Return of the King” (using some of the same voice actors from their animated version of “The Hobbit”) wasn’t bad at all (for kids). As a little girl, I happened to turn on the TV right before the cartoon scene of Eowyn bringing down the Witch-King of Angmar (which was a truly dramatic scene in that version), and that is part of what turned me onto the fantasy genre. Having cute songs as part of the narrative may be irritating for adults, but they are fine for kids (and the songs were often pulled directly from Tolkien’s own songs in the books). Of course, Peter Jackson’s adaptations were more sophisticated. I haven’t read the books since I was in high school, so I am happily ignorant of whatever terrible changes he made. It is a good thing, too - if I had read the books more recently I would have been extremely vexed with his inaccuracies. The way things turned out, I end up being a much happier person.
