Marcus: Mr. Director, sir? About this script? Jason: It leaves some things out. Director: Boys, "The Lord of the Rings" is over 1,000 pages long. If we tried to capture every tiny detail, we'd end up with a 40-hour film. Who wants that?! Marcus: Figures our mouths would be too full of droll to answer. Jason: Waigt! Comlg baglk!

That’s less than 2 seasons of 24. I’m ready!

My biggest disapointment was leaving out The Scouring of the Shire.

Add my vote, too. And i agree with runar about the scouring of the Shire. That was the most blatant departure from the book.

If not for 1,000 pages, think of all the more trouble I would have gotten into as a youth.

I would get too board. Be way too much reading.

I’d like to see a movie version of Bored of the Rings.

I would have liked to have seen everything from the LOTR books put into the movies.
I wished the same for the Harry Potter books. I was really disappointed with the 6th film. I was hoping to see Dumbledore chew out the Dursleys for all the mistreatment Harry suffered from them.

The disappointment we all felt in the Harry Potter films is one of the best examples of how difficult it is to make a novel into a movie. The story is chopped up too much, entire chapters are omitted, characters are left undeveloped, the actors talk too fast, and the movie serves only to illustrate the story, rather than tell it.

40-hr films of both LOTR and HP would be fantastic! However, since I also like the current adaptations of each, I would probably alternate between the long and short versions. I do that with my Jane Austen adaptations as well (I have three “Emma”s now, two “Mansfield Park”s, and many more than that, and I watch a different adaptation depending on my mood….) Of course, I recognize I’m not posting to the Jane Austen crowd at the moment…. Time for me to reread LOTR - it has been a while….
