What Linus says in closing panel is a reference to the famous book by the late JD Salinger,“The Catcher in the Rye,” of course.

I wouldn’t say of course. It could also be a reference to the old song lyric, “If a body, met a body, comin’ through the rye.” which predates Salinger by decades.

The original allusion is to an old poem by Robert Burns, “Comin’ Thro’ the Rye”, which dates to 1782, thus predating Salinger not by decades but centuries! It’s also a rather naughty bit of verse to say the least, with a lot of sexual overtones, with a rather explicit version too. What, Linus, now that Sally’s mad at you, you’re suddenly all dere dere after being tsun tsun for so long? :P
