As this is a little before my time, I had to resort to Wikipedia to figure this one out.
It says, "Another related term used in Australia is âSydney or the bushâ, which equates with such terms as âHollywood or bustâ to mean staking total success or failure on one high-risk event. This usage appears in several Peanuts cartoons, causing Charlie Brown much confusion."
It has done the same or modern readers.
