Of course, Charlie Brown, in the 1969 feature film “A Boy Named Charlie Brown” when you were in the spelling bee, all the neighborhood kids said that saying.

As this is a little before my time, I had to resort to Wikipedia to figure this one out.

It says, "Another related term used in Australia is “Sydney or the bush”, which equates with such terms as “Hollywood or bust” to mean staking total success or failure on one high-risk event. This usage appears in several Peanuts cartoons, causing Charlie Brown much confusion."

It has done the same or modern readers.

The there’s ‘stay atop the dog house or have a mug of root beer with Carl Mauldin.’
