Eagle, if cartoonists only did strips on stuff that EVERYONE knows, there wouldn’t be much laughter in the comics….that’s why we have friendly commenters, one of them is sure to know what any given strip is about!
I noted off to the right of the cartoon there are links to Foxtrot’s website, Facebook, and Twitter. Knowing Amend’s sense of humor, I would suggest that they be reordered to put Twitter before Facebook. Then when you look at it it will say “WTF” and grab your attention better :)
There is also some notes about this strip at the Foxtrot site for those who want more info on Pokemon.
I feel like the concept of pokeballs isn’t so far removed that one would have “no idea” what this is about. If nothing else, you can clearly infer that Gilgalith is some sort of pokemon, and that the action of throwing a ball relates to using said pokemon.
This isn’t some super nerdy obscure reference that only die-hard fans are going to get. This is pretty mainstream pop-culture humor.
I wrote this strip the week Pokémon Black and White came out and was torn btwn using an old classic like Charizard or going with one of the new ones. In the end, I went with one of the new ones. I have no idea if Gigalith is particularly awesome, I just thought he looked cool.
A person should not have to do “research” to understand a comic strip.
However, if you don’t get it (as I didn’t either), just move on and chalk one up to being too far removed from the nonsense of the world.
Fogger - excellent point
I’m not interested in keeping up with “trends” like Pokemon (which yes, I realize has been out for quite some time) but at least his angle about the Charizard card with Eileen Jacobson was humorous for us non-Pokeman fans as well

Wait a minute…
Since when did Jason have the strength to throw a baseball that far?
Maybe the ball is hollow. Maybe there IS a Pokemon inside. :-o

Finally, a Pokémon Black and White joke! I’ve been into the series since it first hit us in 1998, so I love mentions like this.
Anyone else have the games? If so, how far are you?

Ignoring the hate for a moment, I have to say:
Extremely well said, Garfield. Extremely well said.
