Go read my comments about mercury and the goddamn government ecofreaks in YESTERDAY’S comic strip. I got there late and they are at the end of the comment section. I don’t need to repeat them here as well.
By the way, in chemistry, which sort if IS my field, ‘organic’ simply means that it has carbon atoms in it. Organic Chemistry is the chemistry of carbon. So EVERYTHING that was ever alive is ‘organic’, along with A LOT of things like DIAMONDS which were NEVER alive!
To say that some PARTICULAR food is ‘organic’ and some other food is NOT ‘organic’ is absolute nonsense!!!
Chief, this has always interested me. Why is carbon the basis for calling something “organic.” Wouldn’t it have to be “living” to be organic, or does the idea of spontaneous generation, which has never come close to being proven but is the entire foundation of evolutionary science, actually prejudice science in its definitions, making modern science a religion more than a science? I wondered because I recently saw an article which used the term”prebiotic” to refer to the inorganic chemicals that come from exploding stars and are found in our chemical composition. To suppose that they will become “biotic” is to openly state a prejudice toward an idea that has no real proof, making it a religious leaning rather than a scientific one.
Oh, if spontaneous generation has actually been proven somewhere, and is not merely an assumption based on naturalistic bias, please forgive me.
A mosquito cried out in pain:
“A chemist has poisoned my brain!”
The cause of his sorrow
was para-dichloro-
diphenyltrichloroethane.
[DDT is easier to say, but it doesn’t rhyme.]
See, Montana Lady, chemists do have a sense of humor, it just can’t be understood by people who aren’t chemists! :-)
BOTH Phenyl (C6H5) and Ethane (C2H6) are ORGANIC compounds, so if you want to grow something drenched in DDT, you are perfectly correct if you call it “ORGANICALLY GROWN”!!!!
As for what you would call something that was grown without pesticides, I’d suggest “grown without pesticides” OR as “JP Steve” so eloquently said, “WORMY!”
I’ve never been in Oklahoma, let alone Tulsa. Although Will Rogers did say that when the Okies moved to California, they improved the I.Q. of BOTH places! :-)
Thanks, BigChief! Always knew my (incomplete) “Master of Pest Management” would come in handy! (Of course the trick is to convince people that less-than-perfect produce is still edible!)

Sounds like Wal-Mart’s definition of “Organic” to me.

Freeholder: All things that are alive contain carbon.

You need a philosopher for that! :-)
