That’s the problem with size restrictions. If you only take the big ones, the genes for big fish disappear from the population. People should only take the small, mature ones, until only genes for big fish are left.
Ditto trophy hunting. Natural predators go after the weak and sick because they’re easier to catch, and as a result the prey species gets stronger with each generation. Human hunters who are pursuing meat will get the biggest animal that they can (most likely, though, the first one that they see), avoiding any sickly looking animals. Human trophy hunters will go after the biggest, strongest, healthiest specimen, bypassing lesser specimens. If too much of the hunting of a prey species comes from humans (trophy hunters particularly) rather than natural predators, then the species will grow weaker with time.
