Chikuku, we did that many years ago when we lived in Phoenix. They had a Greyhound racing track and we found out that the ones that didn’t win were often brutally killed or sent off for experimentation to labs.
By chance we heard about a brindle female that was no longer wanted and was going to be killed by her owner. We asked if we could have her and he was glad to be rid of her.
We named her “Sheila” and we were rewarded with one of the kindest, most loving spirits anyone could hope to ask for. We had some unusual experiences trying to teach her the things you would think every dog should know. But of course she had no idea about being housebroken, riding in cars, how to act in public, all those things most dogs learn as they grow up.
But she learned quickly and was such a love. She had a good life after the brutal track experiences. We loved her. She loved us.
Back in my younger days, when I lived near a track, I helped a lady place greyhounds. she averaged 150 - 200 placements a month during the racing season.
“retired” Greyhounds can make wonderful pets. So do danes if you realize that a 6 month old puppy is going to do puppy things only on a much grander scale.

What about the noble basset hound with his sturdy physique and his tail held high?

Fred’s steady and close to the ground, as Man’s best friend should be. Speaking of Man’s best friend, is it a coincidence how Fred doesn’t talk?
