Hey, as a old fart tecknophobe Luddite, I take offence. I still can’t figure out how to slam the cell phone on an annoying caller. Progress, Ha! Why back when I was knee high to a grasshopper (between ice ages), when I wanted to call my girl, I opened the window and screamed, “Hey Hot to Trot, doing anything tonight?”
Not being quite 50, I remember at my granparents having to wait literally hours for the 2 old women to stop yakking because Grandpa was cheap and still had a party line.
I was on a party line until 1996, when I had to switch to a private line so I could connect to the Internet. And now I don’t use the phone line for the Internet any more anyway. However, I haven’t had a rotary dial phone since 1980…
To see ‘Primitive’ equipment watch 1981 primitive Internet report
Note the dial phone with acoustic modem and the TRS 80 I w/ its cassette tape record.

Any land-line, direct-connect (not cordless) phone works during a power outage - they’re powered by the phone line.
