I put a large, fairly heavy can in the middle of the dog’s dish, making a toroid area for his food, thus making him work harder to get it. Instead of wolfing it in 20 seconds, he now needs about 2 minutes to eat it all.
My dogs always had food left over for the night. Of course I did “free feeding”. I never wanted them to be hungry and so they actually were more casual about eating and didn’t “wolf down” their food.
Actually, my previous dog, I would put out food for her in the morning when I left for work, and she wouldn’t eat it until I got home. I figured she was saving it to make sure I showed up and she wouldn’t have to ration it. :)
Sure makes a change from the food-oriented dog I have now - she scarfs it down right away and looks around for more.
