The first time I heard of “butter and egg money” was years
ago in Snuffy Smith. Since Snuffy and Loweezy were hillbillys I didn’t know if it was for buying butter and eggs or from selling butter and eggs. Which is it?
geneking7320,
The term “butter and egg money” arose at the time men were supposed to be the primary earners in a family. The women stayed home to take care of the house and children. They did contribite to family income by selling what butter they could churn and eggs they would gather from the laying hens. The phrase is really not applicable to Clovia and Slim, since she owns the garage and her husband is her employee.
Maybe Slim has a cow & hens stashed away somewhere to make late-night eggnog from, although I doubt he’d leave enough to sell for cash.
Butter and egg money was money the woman of the house had earned, so she was the one to make decisions about how it would be spent. Unfortunately Clovia has had the decision taken out of her hands. Literally!
As for Slim, it’s time he was fired….

Fortunately, cabdrivers aren’t really like that. If one did that to me, I’d have him arrested.

I don’t recall the cabbie being invited in, that’s breaking and entering.
