This reminds me of an inmate who served in the Polish military that wrote a letter to a US federal judge requesting permission while serving his time to be on a hanger strike. He was in general population when he wrote the letter and was rounded, place in our Special Housing Unit (jail within the secured perimeter of the prison.) He goofed up when breakfast was offered and he took the milk. In his mind “hunger strike” meant eating solid food. Protein in whatever form, liquid or solid breaks the strike.
