Back then there was constant friction between Church and State. Anybody remember the quarrel between Henry II and Becket, and how that one ended? Looks to me like those two are celebrating the fact that they’ve figured out a new way to shaft the peasants and share the results.
The ammendment was intended to keep the federal government from declaring any religion to be the one official religion of the United States. It was not intended to keep those of faith from participating in the political process as mrprongs seems to believe it should. It is as much a separation of state and church as it is church and state.

Now the sates let the church make ridiculous laws. Like banning gay marriages. Screw the Constitution cries the church.
