The last one I waas at, they handed you the speaker when you drove in. The speakers plugged into the post. That way, if you drove off with it still on your car, it wasn’t a major rewiring job.
The last I knew there is an active drive-in theater down US 5 in Fairlee, VT. The Fairlee Motel and Drive-in. The motel is probably what keeps the drive-in going..

There’s still a drive in not far from where I live, haven’t been there in a long time
I hear now they broadcast by radio and you can listen on your car speakers
I’m sure Gray isn’t the only one to ever drive off with the window speaker

Last time we went was 1987, when we hadn’t been for many years. No speakers at all, a radio station you tune to, to hear the movie.

Never had that problem. Of course we put the speaker INSIDE the car so we could hear the sound (such as it was sometimes).
