Slowly build up your miles starting in March, or whenever the weather turns towards spring. Keep it up and by June you will be able to handle a summer of centuries and maybe RAGBRAI or The Great Ride. Bicycling publishes a guide to preparing for a century ride every year. You don’t have to ride a century, but it is a pretty good guide for getting in shape. Like running, start slow and short and soon your endurance will build up.
