We first used an old poodle skirt that once belonged to my mother. (Rumour, or family story, has it that she bought it from Julie Lynne Charlot herself) It worked well until the tree out grew it. We eventually found commercially made tree skirting and use that in conjunction with the train layout around the base of the tree. The old poodle skirt is still doing service around the base of the tree we set up at the clinic.

BTW, the lady credited with designing the poodle skirt is still alive at the age of 100. IIRC she has a page on Wikipedia.
