When swatting a fly, never try to come straight down. Come in from behind the fly slightly and with the swatter angled slightly (where the edge closest to the fly is slightly higher than the far edge.)
When a fly takes off, it actually goes backwards a bit as it’s going up. So the swatter will be in a better position to catch it. The fly senses air pressure changes so the swatter won’t be causing quite as much of a pressure wave. And it’s also less in the visual field of the fly.

I think they are smart. When one buzzes around me and I raise my hand it goes away until I put my hand down again.
