Doonesbury by Garry Trudeau for May 14, 2011
Transcript:
Ray: Home? Sir, you can't send me home! Surgeon: Ray, you've had a lot of neuro-trauma. You should've been sent home a long time ago. Ray: But I don't do well at home, sir - this is my home! Surgeon: Kandahar's your home? Ray: No, war. War's my home. War is simple. I know what to do. War makes complete sense to me. Surgeon: And your real home? Ray: Sir, my real home is AT&T bills and couple's counseling. Surgeon: Mine, too. But isn't that what we're fighting for?

Go home boy, Obama needs you.

Son, you ever consider transfering to the USMC?
crlinder over 13 years ago
Any guesses why Trudeau singled out AT&T for Ray’s lament?

I wonder how many people realize just how true this little story really is? Not from some political point of view, but that there really are guys out there like Ray. Trudeau tends toward morality plays, but this one grabbed me.

Saying war is messed up is hardly “propaganda”. Nobody likes war, especially those who fight.

“propagandizing” = “saying stuff that I don’t want to hear or think about”

“propagandizing” – Really?. Saying that good people get hurt in war is hardly propaganda. The mental impact of war is definitely a theme of Trudeau’s coverage of our recent wars.

To anybody who thinks this is propaganda, I have this to say: Go Beck yourself….

Heck, let him stay. Vet benefits are expensive. It’s cheaper in the long run to send him out fighting until he dies.

Craig has never tried to make sense of phone charges. Ray symbolizes WAY too many of our troops. GT has been calling it right since he let Phred speak up.

Right, Lew. Except that a transfer to the Corps isn’t exactly a transfer. When I left the dogfaces in 1966 as an E-4 with three years of service, I became an E-1, recruit. After Boot Camp and ITR, I was graciously promoted to E-4, recognizing my prior service. You cannot become a Marine by transferring. You can only become a Marine by earning the name and that requires Boot Camp. After my four years in he Corps and three of those years in Vietnam I figured I had enough of either green machine but I will always be a Marine. Not so much a dogface.

@tigger what part of this strip do you see as being pro-war??? this is a pretty accurate reflection, as I see it, of its psychic cost.
ChukLitl Premium Member over 13 years ago
He’s not for the war, Tigger, he’s giving the Rays a voice. Life or death stress can be easier to deal with than interpersonal relationships. Somebody’s always going to hate us & some people would just as soon be the ones that have to fight them. I grew up around Rays & deal with them regularly, but I’m just the tuba player.

He’d rather go “BOOM!” 17 times than go home? Is he going for 20? What’s the record?
jeanne1212 over 13 years ago
Tigger > 0h? Where does it seem GT is for this – or any other – War? I missed THAT panel!
