Considering that America’s economic system is predicated on the expression of how far capitalism can go to the detriment of the common good, the doctrine of exceptionalism—that America is the best nation— shouldn’t surprise no one. If we really believed in our own exceptionalism, we’d do better in competing with other nations. And we’re doing worse by many accounts on several fronts.
