There must be such a thing as good fruitcake. I’ll admit I haven’t eaten much fruitcake at all, so I wouldn’t know the difference. I know it’s an old cliche that fruitcake is awful, but if it were really that bad, no one would ever bother making it, right?
Don’t disparage their gift. You can always use another doorstop. No, really, I used to hate fruitcakes till my mother got a recipe for an icebox fruitcake. If you like fruit and nuts, then this cake’s for you.
A good fruitcake can be great. My grandmother would make one that required rum inside and rum, or some alcoholic drink, be poured over the top and ignited before slicing and eating. MMMMMM
I actually like November. It’s a kind of by-month, Thanksgiving notwithstanding. Leaves are gone, birds and squirrels are busying winter-proofing, and the growing season in in lull making me feel like I’m off the hook for actually DOing something. The chill is an excuse to cook the heavier meals and treats that don’t seem right before in the year. The cold winds are a reason for fleece and warm throws and hunkering with hot drinks and good books, and generally there’s no snow yet to contend with. Yep, November is OK with me.
That heavy Fruitcake, sliced and warmed slowly in a skillet (with real butter) becomes amazingly sweet. Transfer to a dessert plate and sprinkle a dusting of confectioners sugar.

Legend has it that there’s really only one fruitcake in the entire world, but it keeps getting re-gifted so it looks like there’s more than one!!

Those fruitcakes are a great substitute for an anvil, if you happen to need one in a pinch.

A local store had one, 20 or 30 pounds, for sale. I was thinking here’s the gift which would be regifted for generations.

most people do not like fruitcake because they do not eat it properly…should be slightly warmed up with a little butter
