Whatever Alistair Cooke’s culinary experiences, I remember the guy fondly. He seemed cultured, I think because of his accent, and like Stephen Fry had a strong fondness and admiration for the States, where I live. I will also never forget the Sesame Street bit where Cookie Monster hosted a cultural segment and introduced himself as, “Me Alistair Cookie!”
I have never liked cranberries in any form. I have always been glad I never got a certain infection where they say to drink cranberry juice to alleviate it. At least it is something that is mostly served only one time a year.
I find that a basic cranberry “sauce” (canned “consommé,” cooked “gravy,” or minimally adulterated “salad,”) is needed to offset the texture of the meat and the sage/thyme flavors of the dressing, especially is the gravy is awful.
My mother-in-law in northern Indiana makes all kind of jello concoctions with fruit, nuts, celery, usually some kind of whipped topping – and she calls them salads. I think it’s a Midwestern thing. Me, I like the raw cranberry & orange relish recipe on the bag of fresh cranberries.

I don’t know what kind of cranberry sauce Mr. Cooke was eating, but clearly he needed to find either a different brand or a better recipe.

The only thing cranberry sauce needs is cranberries. Happy Thanksgiving.
