That teacher looks awful surly in the last panel, I bet it comes out that she assigns more than she’s supposed to and didn’t expect to get caught out by a parent.
I was part of an “experimental” class. In 6th grade, they had us move from room to room to “prepare” us for going to junior high. In junior high, there was no homework at all. I was in the school band, as well as the yearbook committee, and in the photography and newspaper clubs.
The last two were handled by my English and Reading teachers. They had us going between their rooms, which were across from each other. We’d be working on the newspaper, taking photographs, or just sitting in one room reading if we preferred. One day I had just gotten off the windowsill (yeah, we sat where we wanted, I often sat on counters or the floor) that I was sitting on, and a freaking window fell where I had been sitting moments before! Yikes! No, I hadn’t been leaning against the window.
As for high school, again, no homework. Honestly, I learned more by reading my way through the public library non-fiction section, starting when I was 8 or so. The librarians didn’t corral us in the children’s section. I suppose if I’d picked something wildly inappropriate that they’d have stopped me, but I don’t recall ever being denied a book!
