Doctors change their minds as new information becomes available, or after consulting with colleagues and specialists. They are also human, and make mistakes. We’re getting closer to robotic diagnosis, which may help if doctors accept the results.
I volunteered to have a colon resection done by a robot. The doctors simply watched anxiously, ready to leap in if robodoc faltered. It didn’t, and the consensus among attending physicians was that it had performed the laparoscopy in about two-thirds the time as a human surgeon, and that there was a near-zero chance of infection because the robot’s tools can be autoclaved like other surgical hardware.
