You have to cook the beans much longer to convert the flatulence enzyme, which makes for very runny beans. Soaking removes the enzyme into the water which is discarded. Some recommend a quick boil and discard that first water rather than soaking. I’ve never had any luck with that. Pressure cooking is also supposed be better for reducing the flatulence potential. Modern Insta-Pots must be a great time saver for bean-based diets.
I am about the same age as the artist of this comic and I got such a laugh out of the Match Game bean celebrities. Watched them many times with mom during sick days from school or rainy summer days. For years I thought Charles Nelson Riley only existed in game shows. Question: how did game show staple Orson Bean not make the cut?

What a hoot! I’ve never had re-fluffed dry beans (well, once or twice in my hippie college years!). Gimme a can any day.
